Helpful Household Cleaning Tips FROM 1SHOP4U, INC.

Few of us like to clean, but it is something we have to do, so why not minimize the effort required. The following are suggestions that just might make the cleaning task easier.

1. It is not necessary to clean things that are not dirty or soiled. Perhaps all that is needed is a "touch-up". If there is a hand print on a perfectly clean mirror, why clean the entire mirror? Just clean the location with the print.

2. If you don't need or like something in your house, give it away, dispose of it, or recycle it rather than having to clean it.

3. Always clean from top to bottom as 'gravity' carries dust down onto lower surfaces.

4. Surfaces that you or yoru visitors can't see - like the top of a cabinet - don't have to be cleaned regularly. Put some paper down, and when it gets too dirty, pick the paper up and throw it away. Then replace it with new, clean paper. Simple, easy and quick.

5. Place mats at each entrance to collect dirt that would otherwise be tracked in. Encourage family and friends to wipe their feet before entering the home. Many people even remove shoewear before entering the home, however, that is not necessary unless you desire.

6. To replace a foam cushion taken from a zippered fabric cover, place the foam in a plastic garbage bag and insert the open ended bag into the cover first. All you have to do once inserted, is pull the bag out, leaving the foam in place.

7. When purchasing furnishings or carpet, be sure to ask about maintenance issues. Check for cleanability codes on upholstered furniture and carpeting. 8. Daily: Dishes should be washed, dried, and put away. Kitchen counters and table wiped after each meal. Sink, microwave should be cleaned once a day, or better.

9. Weekly: Dust furniture and shelves; vacuum floors and furniture. Clean under furniture and behind it. Damp mop hard flooring. Empty wastebaskets, wash bathroom basins, fixtures and floors. Dust woodwork, pictures and mirrors. Wipe window sills and clean shades and blinds. Clean kitchen stove and burners, wipe refrigerator and kitchen cabinet fronts and polish bright metal finishes.

10. Monthly: Vacuum thoroughly, brush curtains and draperies, wipe wood trim, walls (where needed) and around doorknobs. Wash windows, floors and wax. Polish wood furniture, clean under sofa cushions. Turn mattresses over to prolong and equalize wear. Clean or change filters as necessary (furnaces, air conditioners, etc.).

Annually: Clean furnace and have it tuned for proper, efficient performance. Check air conditioners for proper operation before onset of hot weather. Shampoo carpets and rugs or have them professionally cleaned every twelve to eighteen months.

And, it is recommended to go through closets and drawers and items that have not been used in the past 6 to 12 months should be given away or donated to appropriate agencies. This keeps your closets and drawers more organized and roomy and can help those less fortunate. Something most of us forget to do - vacuum or dust under and behind refrigerators, washers and dryers and other major appliances.
