Back from the London Adventure, which turned out to be absolutely wonderful and fantastic in every way. As promised, here is a short run down of how it all went, and to answer the questions I posed in the last update.
Progressive MS, using a wheel chair 90% of the time, poor speaking ability, did provide me with a truly adventurous journey.
how will I get from the customs office to the car rental?
This was answered for me because our flight was 6 hours late due to bad weather, and the car rental office was closed – so rented a taxi for the 10 minute ride which cost us $100 US – a vast sum that I considered a true rip off, but as I learned, London is way expensive.
how will I find my friend who arrives by train from southern area of London?
Poor gal waited 6 hours at the Heathrow Airport, and then we almost missed each other among the thousands of people at terminal 4. With the help of a loud speaker page for her, we did connect, both exhausted
what will my friend think of this worn out old body?
She did not care about the body, just happy to see me. That fear was not worth spending time on as I learned.
how will shopping for groceries and supplies go?
Teddy took care of that, and with the help of the walker I took along, we managed to walk the groceries to the apartment and get them up the one flight of stairs.
finding a church for Christmas Services?
Again, taken care of quite easily as we held our own at the apartment. Without the aid of a rental car, getting to any church was more then we wanted to endure.
will driving be more difficult then in the USA? Actually, I had driven in England on a previous trip, so it would not have been difficult. However, we both decided to spend the money helping people in Uganda rather then spend the high rental fees. Besides, the weather was lousy each and every day we were together – rain, thick fog, wind and cold – every day!!! Touring would not have provided much for either of us, but we did walk to Windsor Castle, several streets of Windsor, and of Eton (using my walker and frequent rest stops), and getting wet and cold.
is leaving the comfort of home and knowing how to get around right?
Yes, it was right, for me. Yes, there were hurdles to cross, which I did. Overall, I would do it all again in a heartbeat. People at the airports were most helpful, the airlines were helpful and gracious, which made the entire travel time quite enjoyable. Flight delays added more adventure as I met several people from different parts of the world and we were able to share experiences, stories and get to know each other over the course of more then 4 hour delays. We actually got to help each other which was rewarding for all of us.
Scared?
Actually, until I turned it over to God, YES! I was concerned, even thought of cancelling the entire venture. However, the flight was paid for, apartment rental paid for – all with no chance of a refund.
Turning it over to God made all the difference as the worries, concerns and fears dissipated entirely. Enjoying each minute and each step of this journey was really fun and I am so happy that I made the effort.
Was it worth it?
A resounding YES – it was very worth all the effort, the flight delays, and the bad weather. We had a great time together sharing and talking almost constantly. We learned new card games together, shared cooking and clean-up chores, tried new foods and new experiences and the Christmas Holiday was complete for both of us.
Getting out of one’s comfort zone – I would recommend this to everyone, able bodied or not. Life is a joyous adventure and one to be relished each day.
Once Again, in closing, here’s a shameless plug for 2 guys who spend all their time trying to help improve the lot of others:
Dr. Anthony G. Payne and Larry M. Howard have coauthored a just released book that I would recommend to all, with or without multiple sclerosis, and especially women concerned about osteoporosis: "Health Benefits of Vitamin K2", ISBN # 978-1-59120-184-7. It is available at www.basichealthpub.com, Basic Health Publications, Inc. and also from Larry Howard’s company, Weller Health Vitamins www.wellerhealthvitamins.com It is also being sold through Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, WalMart, Swanson Health Products and a host of others. It is actually the only book on K2 for laypeople on the market! And at $9.95 retail – packed as it is with all kinds of dietary and health goodies -- it’s a bargain.
and of course, my book - below.....
Blessings always, and best wishes for a healthy life to all,
Have a Prosperous and healthy Year, take time to have your own adventure, and enjoy each day we are alive, to the fullest, no matter what.
