October 22nd, 2006 found me flying to San Diego, California and then on to Mexico to be once again availed of the kind ministrations of Dr. Fernando Ramirez (on the 25th). Although planning for this special trip started months ago, it came together quickly about mid-way through October.
The treatment consisted of three (3) vials of human umbilical cord stem cells. One vial of primitive neurogenic progenitors (~1.8 million), 1 vial of CD34-/45+ hUCSCs (~1.8 million); and one vial containing 1.5 million hUCSCs that have been genetically modified so as to produce and spit out ciliary neurotrophic growth factor (CNGF). All told, about 5.1 million stem cells were introduced into my body by IV along with a drug (Mannitol) to fully open up my blood brain barrier. Amazingly, as the new stem cells passed into my body an odor and taste was immediate in my throat and nostrils. This (I was told) was the small amount of DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide) used in the cyropreservation of the stem cells.
As I sit and key this in, I am amazed to think that the genetically engineered cells are no doubt now churning out CNGF – a compound that has been shown to bring about remyelination in various studies. And it is remyelination that I need! After all, when nerves are stripped of myelin they malfunction – much like electric wires whose insulation has been partially removed.
Now comes the time of waiting to see just how much improvement these new cells will produce in my ravaged body, brain, spinal cord and nerves. It is less then two weeks since the stem cells were infused, yet I am already experiencing a notable increase in energy that has brought me up to a level I have not known in months. This is most welcome indeed! As is some slight improvements in speech I and others have noticed cropping up during the last few days.
The doctors involved think truly pronounced improvements will not make themselves known for two (2) to three (3) more months. But with these early signs of improvement, this writer is now thinking (as Dr. Payne told me) “the train to Wellville has already left the station.” I should add that I am very positive about the kind and extend of positive changes these new genetically engineered stem cells will bring about. Of course, like any new experiment or voyage of exploration, nothing is written in stone, thus one must be patient and maintain a "wait and see" attitude.
For me, continuing along the path of being a “human guinea pig" seems the best – the only -- way to go. For without intervention this Earth-suit of mine will surely head in only one direction: Down. And I must confess, I truly abhor the thought of having someone wiping my behind or feeding me gruel through a straw! (A state I could wind up in if nature is left to its own devices) So, yes, in-a-way the role of "guinea pig" is a no-brainer.
What about costs you ask? Yes, it was expensive enough – but not exorbitant. But I must point this out: I’ll pay a helluva lot more down the line for home healthcare if I just let my challenge (MS) have its way with me!
In closing, here’s a shameless plug for 2 guys who spend all their time trying to help improve the lot of others:
Dr. Anthony G. Payne and Larry M. Howard have coauthored a just released book that I would recommend to all, with or without multiple sclerosis, and especially women concerned about osteoporosis: "Health Benefits of Vitamin K2", ISBN # 978-1-59120-184-7. It is available at www.basichealthpub.com, Basic Health Publications, Inc. and also from Larry Howard’s company, Weller Health Vitamins www.wellerhealthvitamins.com It is also being sold through Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, WalMart, Swanson Health Products and a host of others. It is actually the only book on K2 for laypeople on the market! And at $9.95 retail – packed as it is with all kinds of dietary and health goodies -- it’s a bargain.
Blessings always, and best wishes for a healthy life to all,
Jim Haverlock
