Saturday, October 22nd and it is a gorgeous day here in the Methow Valley of Washington State. Fall colors are vibrant this morning with the bright morning sun shining on everything, and white snow on the mountain tops. Almost picture perfect as everyone is readying their homes for the winter season soon to be upon us.
The new Korean technology for umbilical cord stem cells is working within my body. Although it is still in early stages since the treatment took place September 13th, a few results are being noticed, and, I might add, welcomed!!!
My speech had declined to the point I no longer answered the phones at work because customers could not understand what I was saying. Plus it was difficult to form words and get them out and extremely difficult to attempt to talk for any period of time. There were some words that just would not come out at all. It is gratifying now to be able to do some phone work again even if it is not on a steady basis. Yes, my speech and voice have improved some. Searching for ways to describe this so all can understand - It is less difficult, not as tiring now, to speak for short durations. Friends and customers can once again understand me with less effort on their part. The ability to talk still comes and goes, but overall it has improved and I am happy about that, because I enjoy visiting with new customers, learning about them, and also my family and friends, and of course, just to have back what we consider to be "normal" functions.
My energy level has increased and exercise is easier again. I continue to work full time at my internet business, which is growing nicely. And again have energy to answer more emails, talk with other "challenged" people on the phone and tend to the chores one has when living alone. My mind and brain are more clear and sharp, too.
Mobility - the tough one for most of us "challenged" with this neurological mis-firing of signals - well, it is slowly improving. This past Sunday I managed to take a few steps unaided before sitting back down in the wheelchair, and went shopping for necessities at a local super store. This is a huge store and in the past I navigated only with the use of one their electric carts. They were all out of these electric carts and after a few minutes thought, decided I would take a regular push cart and see how far this body would make it before I had to ask for assistance. Amazingly this body pushed the cart the entire perimeter of the store, even going out through the garden section. Also went up and down a couple of aisles before checking out, pushing the filled cart out to the car, unloading and driving the 40 miles back home where I unloaded and put everything away.
On Monday a few more steps, again unaided; Tuesday more steps and Wednesday I walked from my home office through the living room and through the kitchen, turned around and walked back to the office and went back to work. This was a really great feeling, having walked (even if it was slow and a bit awkward) that distance without any support from walls, furniture, canes or anything else. Always a bit reluctant to let oneself be too excited, Thursday found me wondering if the past few days were a "fluke". Again, I walked from the office through the living room and kitchen, through the entrance door and down my wheelchair ramp and stood outside breathing in the fresh fall air, all the while grinning. After a few minutes, I walked back to the office and back to chores at hand. All of this unaided, no support system involved and it felt really good and nice.
My wish and prayers are that these new cells, along with this body, my faith and positive attitude, will continue to improve the connections between brain and body parts. I also remain realistic and am happy with the results thus far, for me this is the best source of possible improvement to come along in recent medical history. Given more time I believe the stem cell research people around the world will find better ways of separating these cells, and better ways of giving them to us "challenged" with ever increasing improvements. For now, this guy is happy for any improvement, any slowing of the progression, any reversal of symptoms for these will allow this body more time while research continues.
It is important for all of us to let our elected officials know of these improvements so that they will be willing to allow for expanded research and clinical testing within the United States so those of us who want our bodies to be better, can do so within the boundaries of our country and not need to seek assistance in foreign lands. It is also my wish that our world and its people would learn to live together in harmony and peace, helping each other, sharing all.
For more information regarding stem cells, here is a link to a Stem Cell Handbook that Dr. Payne has put together. It is full of updated, good information for those of us researching this topic. The 90 page article is in pdf format, so you can save it to your computer, print it out or just read it. This is the link:
